IIT Kharagpur Research & Innovation Updates - IIT Club
IIT Kharagpur was the first IIT to be established, in 1951.
The then Chief Minister of West Bengal persuaded India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to establish the first institute in West Bengal. The first IIT was thus established in May 1950 as the Eastern Higher Technical Institute and located in Esplanade East, Calcutta. Later that year, it shifted to its permanent campus at Hijli, Kharagpur 120 kilometres south-west of Kolkata. Interesting, Hijli was a detention camp during the British colonial rule that held Indian freedom fighters captive.
The 2100 acre campus is located five kilometres away from Kharagpur Railway Station, with the layout and design of buildings carried out by a group of engineers and architects under the guidance of Werner M. Moser, a Swiss architect.
IIT Kharagpur is today is one of the most sought after IITs by those qualifying in the JEE.
This section at IIT Club provides updates on research and innovation efforts from IIT Kharagpur, especially those that have reached a reasonable level of commercialization or market-readiness.
