IIT Bombay was founded in 1958. Since its establishment in Powai, the institute has physically expanded to cover a combined area of more than 2.2 square kilometers (550 acres).

In recent times, IIT Bombay is said to be the most preferred institute, with most of the top JEE rank students selecting this IIT over others.
